Philips Twin TurboStar XXL

Features
  • Capacity: 3 lb.
  • Voltage: 120 V
  • Item dimensions (in.): 17.32×13.38×16
  • Item weight: 18.74 lbs.
  • Controls: dial
  • Fat reduction claim: 90%
  • Material: Stainless steel/PP plastic
  • Warranty: 1-year

Other features: includes a Quick clean basket, a non-stick Teflon covering

With a 3lb/4quart capacity this air fryer is perfect for making delicious meals for your entire family. The twin basket design means you can cook different types of food with the TurboStar XXL quite conveniently.

Unlike the digital models of the TurboStar, like the HD9650/96 that digital controls with a displayer, this one is more of an analog unit. There is a 60-minutes analog timer on the front timer that works like a dial. You can use this to set the cooking time. There is also a dial on the top of the air fryer to set the temperature. This is perfect for seasoned air fryer users but might be a problem for beginners. Also, once the timer has been set, it is difficult to stop it. You will have to unplug the entire unit from the electrical outlet if you make a mistake or change your mind about cooking time.

What do we love it for?
  • One of the most impressive things about this unit is that it combines a huge size with quick-cooking action. At 4 quart capacity, one might expect the unit to take a while to cook food. But the air fryer is designed to put off enough heat to cook really fast. What's more, it does not heat up your house while it does it which is probably why it is so efficient. A good measure of the heat is looked inside so that the fryer itself stays cool to the touch while cooking your food incredibly fast.
    What were we disappointed with?
  • One minor quirk we found with the Twin TurboStar XXL air fryer is that it gives off a fair amount of smoke while it operates. The smoke problem is not a major one. You can fix it by toning down your oil usage from the onset. Air fryers don't need a lot of oil anyways so this should not be a problem. Go light on the oil and you won't trip off the fire alarm in your kitchen.

Philips XXL HD9650/96

Features
  • Capacity: 3 lb.
  • Voltage: 120 V
  • Item dimensions (in.): 15.55×15.55×15.67
  • Item weight: 19 lbs.
  • Controls: dial
  • Fat reduction claim: 90%
  • Material: Stainless steel/PP plastic
  • Warranty: 1-year

Other features: a digital interface, a multi-cooking technology, and a Quick-clean basket

True to the XXL in its name, this air fryer indeed has a large footprint. It is 12 inches wide and has a depth of 17 inches. It is also 12 inches tall. Not only does this unit have a large capacity, but its temperature range is also enormous as well. It can go all the way up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit from 175 with a temperature adjustment of 25-degree increment. There is a dial at the front to control the temperature. This is also a digital unit which means the cooking time and the temperature can be easily controlled and set to the desired level.

The Philips Turbostar XXL is built from similar materials to many other air fryers from Philips and other manufacturers (Plastic and metal). It also has a similar design. But unlike expensive models from Philips like the Philips Avance collection, the XXL has pretty basic controls. There are two dials on the front face of the air fryer to control the temperature and the timer. The timer knob also serves as the power switch.

    What are our favorite features?
  • If there's anything we like about the Philips TurboStar XXL it's how it delivers on its promise of low oil cooking. With this cooker, you can prepare healthier but absolutely delicious fried food using up to 90% less fat than a conventional air fryer. It performs better at this than many other air fryers too. This model of air fryer comes with a special fat reducer plat at the bottom of the unit. This design allows it to capture excess fat from food quite effectively.
    What could be better?
  • One major drawback of this unit is that it does not come with any accessories. Instead, they are sold separately. This is a huge bummer considering the high price tag of this air fryer. It is one of the most expensive options out there which is quite understandable considering its large capacity and the fact that it is a full-featured digital unit. But it a few extra accessories would have helped reduce the need to splash a fortune on accessories in addition to the high upfront cost of the air fryer.

  • Controls: digital
  • Fat reduction claim: 90%
  • Material: Stainless steel/PP plastic
  • Warranty: 1-year

Other features: includes a Quick clean basket with non-stick coating, 7 preset programs

The Philips Essential Air Fryer is a portable air fryer with a 1.8lb capacity. It also features digital touchscreen controls and has a patented star-fish base design which ensures efficient air circulation. This is a compact unit, so it is best suited for smaller kitchens. You can expect it to sit snugly on your counter and given its 9.9lbs size, hauling it out of your cupboard shouldn’t be a difficult chore.

The Philips Essential Air Fryer is more compact than most of the other air fryers on this list. It has a 4.8liter capacity which many would still consider great enough for a small family. The compact size does mean you don’t need as much counter space as you would do with a Turbostar XXL for instance. One significant upgrade this unit has over many other models is the 7-preset cooking functions. This lets you automatically set the cook time and temperature at which you’re cooking depending on what you’re cooking.

    What makes it stand out?
  • If you are tight on counter space, the Philips Essential Air fryer might be an ideal choice for you. In addition to being compact, this unit also operates quite quietly. Although air fryers are generally not known for being quiet, the Philips Essential does better than many other models on the market. If you prefer your air fryer makes as little noise as possible when you cook, then this option is worth considering.
Which disadvantages must you keep in mind?
  • Despite the promise of up to 90% fat reduction, we found that this air fryer needs more oil for cooking compared to other air fryer models. While it still uses considerably less oil than a conventional oven or deep fryer would, almost all the recipes you can prepare with this unit requires you to cook with oil. This might be a problem if you prefer an air fryer that lets you cook with as little oil as possible.

Best for a Healthy Lifestyle

Philips HD9220/29

Features
  • Capacity: 1.8 lb./2.75qt.
  • Voltage: 120 V
  • Item dimensions (in.): 13.78×13.78×14.88
  • Item weight: 12.24 lbs.
  • Controls: dial
  • Fat reduction claim: 75%
  • Material: Stainless steel/PP plastic
  • Warranty: 1-year

Other features: Quick start, food reference guide, and free app with more than 150 recipes

Featuring Philips’ patented Rapid Air Technology, the Philips HD9220/29 Air fryer does a good job at circulation hot air with high speed and precision. This allows it to achieve the best results as far as cooking a delicious meal using less fat and oil goes.

The Philips Viva Air fryer is actually one of the more affordable options from the company. In addition to the lower price point, this is also an incredibly compact unit. Compared to many of the other air fryers from Philips with wide side and low-height design, this one has a tall and thin design. This makes it perfect for kitchens where you don’t have a lot of space on your counter for appliances.

    What are its best features?
  • The Philips Viva Air fryer has a glossy and appealing design that is sure to look great on any kitchen counter. We found the compact size quite beneficial as well especially for those with a crowded counter. With this design, you can easily leave your air fryer out on the counter instead of having to stow it away in a cupboard somewhere. We love the retro-styled timer knob as well.
    What could be improved?
  • Size is of course a major complaint from most users. But if you're buying a unit like this, you should know that you will be sacrificing large capacity for portability. It is impossible to get the best of both worlds. The unit also doesn't have a window through which you can keep an eye on the progress of what you're cooking. You can hear what you're cooking is fried and tossed around in the fryer, but it is difficult to tell if it is fully cooked already or not until you switch off the unit and look into the basket.

Best Designed

Philips HD9230/26

Features
  • Capacity: 1.8 lb.
  • Voltage: 120 V
  • Item dimensions (in.): 15.35×15.35×14.88
  • Item weight: 16 lbs.
  • Controls: digital
  • Fat reduction claim: 75%
  • Material: Stainless steel/PP plastic
  • Warranty: 1-year

Other features: a Rapid Air technology, a double layer rack

The Philips HD9230 Air Fryer uses a combination of rapid air technology and a top grill to heat and cook your food with delicious crispy results. The Philips Viva Collection Air Fryer is among the most affordable but equally effective options from Philips. It is a digital unit with fully adjustable temperature controls that allow you to set the preset cooking temperature of your meals quite conveniently.

The Philips HD9230 features a patented Starfish design which is found in a few other models from Philips. This is a star-fish-like pattern at the bottom of the fryer which helps to enhance airflow by boosting heat circulation beneath the food basket.

    What makes it special?
  • We love the unit's fully adjustable temperature controls which allow you to select the best cooking temperature for your recipe. The temperature can be set up for as much as 390°F. The unit comes with a double-layered rack accessory. This helps to maximize cooking space so that you can easily prepare different types of meals simultaneously. This is perfect for larger families or situations where you have a lot of food to prepare. However, the rack accessory is best used for flat foods such as fish fillets and burgers.
    What cons did we find?
  • If you do a lot of cooking and you're for a unit with a larger basket, the Philips HD9230/26 may not be an ideal choice for you. The basket isn't very large and your food might not cook evenly when it is filled to the brim. The double-layer accessory boosts the versatility of this unit, but it doesn't come pre-sold with the air fryer. You will have to purchase it along with other accessories you need to get the best from this air fryer.

Other features: a multi-cooking technology, a non-stick grill pan

If you are very familiar with setting up an air fryer, then the Philips Premium Analog Air Fryer may be an ideal choice for you. With a 2lbs capacity, this air fryer is large enough for preparing meals for up to 4 people. This means you can fit a whole bag of French fries into the unit conveniently. The fryer works faster than a conventional unit with no need to preheat. This allows you to save a lot of time on your cooking.

This unit is the analog version of the Philips HD9650 which is digital. This means it does not come with digital controls features like an auto timer or digital temperature controls and presets. To use this unit, you will need to set the temperature and time manually. It is more suitable for users that are more familiar with air fryer recipes that can easily set the right temperature. This Analog unit has a slightly larger basket compared to the digital version.

    What are our favorite features?
  • This Philips Air fryer has an effective fat removal technology that extracts as much as 90% of oil (a lot higher than many other products). You need little or no oil to prepare food with this unit and the result is a more delicious and healthier air-fried food. We also love how versatile this air fryer is. It can be used for grilling, roasting, baking, and reheating meals.
    What could be better?
  • This is an analog air fryer. This is not a problem per se, especially if you are familiar with air fryer recipes and know-how to set the temperature and monitor the time effectively. There's no digital display or touch control. You turn a knob to set the temperature and another knob to set the time. Beginners may find a digital unit a more convenient alternative.

Easiest to Clean

Philips TurboStar

Features
  • Capacity: 1.8 lb./2.75qt.
  • Voltage: 220 V
  • Item dimensions (in.): 14.3 x 10.4 x 11.2
  • Item weight: 15.08 lbs.
  • Controls: dial
  • Fat reduction claim: 90%
  • Material: Stainless steel/PP plastic
  • Warranty: 2-years

Other features: includes a digital display, a Quick clean basket, and a recipe booklet

The Philips Turbostar is a solid and well-built air fryer. It features a sleek design with an attractive finish that is sure to look great in any modern kitchen. This unit is also able to deliver a lot of power. The effective Turbostar technology ensures that the unit cooks food quite effectively even when filled up.

This air fryer has a capacity of 2.75 quarts. This puts it right in the middle of the pack as far as size goes. It is obviously smaller than the TurboStar XXL but still large enough for personal use or for a small family that does not do a lot of air frying. This unit features easy-to-use electronic controls. There are also some preprogrammed settings. But asides from this there aren’t so many bells and whistles on this air fryer.

Why did it make our list?
  • This automated design of this unit makes it an ideal choice for both newbie air fryer users as well as more seasoned users. If you're looking for an appliance that does not have a steep learning curve, this might be an ideal choice for you. We love the simplicity but subtle sophistication of this unit. The sleek display screen adds a modern appeal to the air fryer even though it does not have so many extra features.
What is not ideal about it?
  • The sleek shiny finish of this air fryer is one of its most attractive features. But this can also be a problem too. The exterior of the air fryer can be easily stained by fingerprints, streaks of water, and dust. This isn't exactly a deal-breaker since you can easily wipe it clean with a damp rag. Another missing feature is the auto-shutoff function. Unlike most air fryers that turn off automatically when the basket is removed, this unit will continue to run if you pull the basket out. You may want to watch out for this and manually shut the air fryer off if you pull out the food before the cooking cycle ends.

Most Enhanced Performance

Philips XL

Features
  • Capacity: 2.65 lb./3.5qt.
  • Voltage: 120 V
  • Item dimensions (in.): 15.5×15.25×15
  • Item weight: 19.11 lbs.
  • Controls: digital
  • Fat reduction claim: 90%
  • Material: Stainless steel/PP plastic
  • Warranty: 1-year

Other features: a Rapid Air technology, a ready indicator, and auto-off function

Philips XL is firmly established as one of Philips’ most popular products and one of the most well-known products in the air fryer market. This product features a digital touch interface that looks cool and has a good number of helpful settings for convenient cooking. The unit has a shut-off feature that turns it off automatically when it is done cooking and notifies the user. It has a large capacity and can be used for grilling, baking, roasting, and frying food to perfection.

The Philips XL Avance collection Airfryer stands out from other products from Philips thanks to its intuitive temperature control settings and impressive power. In addition to the possibility of adjusting the temperature by up to 390 degrees Fahrenheit and 60 minutes timer, (which is sort of standard for most Airfryers) this unit also allows you to set multiple presets. You will find this very helpful if you cook the same type of food often.

Why did it make our list?
  • One of the common challenges with larger air fryers is that they tend to be difficult to clean up after use. This is not much of a problem with this Philips XL air fryer. All the components that come in contact with the food are dishwasher safe. This makes cleanup very easy. We also love how well-built this unit is. It is durable and suitable for daily use.
What is not ideal about it?
  • While this air fryer is relatively easy to use, many users have claimed that there is a learning curve that takes some getting used to. We have to admit that this is sort of expected for an appliance with a broad range of functionality. A bit of time and experimentation may be needed to get the best cook time for different foods. The XL does come with a basic cookbook which can help you get started with using this unit.

Things to Consider

What is special about Philips Air Fryers?

Philips invented the original air fryer in 2010 and the company has had years to perfect the technology behind this innovative product. Developed using the company’s patented Rapid Air Technology, Philips air fryers were able to produce crispy fries containing up to 80% less fat than conventional fryers right from the onset. Philips remains the most well-known air fryer maker brand and all the company’s products are reputed for their impressive quality.

The Philips air fryer is designed to cook food fast and more efficiently. Philips manufactures the best air fryers for grills, fry, bakes, bakes, reheating, dehydrating, and toast recipes. No doubt, these are among the most versatile kitchen appliances. Of course, since there are various types, you want to ensure that the product you buy has all the features you need.

Features to consider

8 Best Philips Air Fryers: Detailed Reviews
The Airfryer can do more than just fry; it also grills, roasts, bakes, reheats, dehydrates, and toasts taking on the role of multiple kitchen appliances, even toaster ovens.

Over the years, the design and functions of air fryers have evolved quite a lot. There are now units you can use to bake and prepare a wide range of other dishes. This gives buyers a whole lot of choice when it comes to picking an air fryer. Even with Philips Air fryers, there are numerous options to choose from based on their specific features and design. To get the best results for your household, you should consider the following features.

Capacity

First, it is important that you consider what size of air fryer would be best for your specific cooking requirements. Most units are designed for cooking food for one to two people at once. But there are larger ones for preparing food for larger groups.

If you have a large family or you get a lot of guests that you cook for, then a large-sized air fryer would be best for you. Air fryers with a capacity of 1-2 liters are often considered small-sized and are perfect for small households. If you want something in the average range, then look out for units with a 1.8 to 2.5 liters capacity. These are perfect for a family of 4-5 people. Larger units like the Philips XXL HD9650/96 with a capacity of up to 5 liters are also available. These types are ideal for cooking for up to 8 people at once.

The capacity of a unit will also determine what you can cook with it and its versatility. If you often cook large meals like roasting a whole chicken, you’d want to go for a large capacity unit. An air fryer with twin baskets will also be perfect for you if you want to fry two foods at the same time.

Voltage

Most air fryers have a wattage that varies between 800W (for smaller units) all the way up to 2175W or even more (for a larger unit like the Philips Air Fryer XL). Averagely, a unit with wattage of about 1425W should work just great. While higher wattage would mean greater electricity consumption, it also means you get to run your unit for a shorter time. The higher wattage, the higher the temperature generated. This ensures that the food cooks faster than a lower wattage unit would do the job.

Item dimensions

When considering the size of your air fryer, you need to look at more than just the capacity of the unit. The exterior dimension matters too and you have to compare it with where you will be placing the unit and how much space you have available. While some units are broader horizontally, others are tall and narrow. For the latter, you will need to have more vertical space than horizontal space.

Be sure to measure how much room you have between the base of your cabinet and the countertop in the area the unit will be placed (leave as much clearance as possible). Picking the right dimension right from the onset ensures that you don’t have to make any major modifications to your kitchen arrangement when your new unit arrives. As we’ve highlighted earlier, the most compact one is the Philips Essential Air Fryer.

Item weight

Weight is not a common concern for a lot of people. If the plan is to leave your unit on the counter when it is not in use, you don’t have to bother a lot about the item’s weight. But for users that intend to store their air fryer away when it is not in use, a compact device would be a lot more beneficial since it’ll be easier to haul from your countertop to the cabinet or anywhere else you want to store it.

Controls

The temperature control feature of your air fryer is a major factor that determines how well food you cook with your air fryer turns out. In most cases, the average recommended temperature is somewhere around 400 degrees. But there are units that don’t go this high or may not operate effectively at a higher temperature.

8 Best Philips Air Fryers: Detailed Reviews
Adjustable temperature allows you not to overcook a meal.

Ensuring that the appliance has proper temperature controls allows you to cook food at the optimal temperature based on the recipe you are preparing. Additional features such as indicator lights and integrated time further give you control over your meals and help to simplify cooking. Some units also have preset buttons that allow you to cook your favorite meals fast.

A pause feature is an equally helpful control feature. An air fryer with this button allows you to pause cooking when you need to stir or flip over your meal and resume when you’re done without losing your initial temperature and time setting. You will find this quite convenient.

Fat reduction claim

Typically, the manufacturer will specify how much fat the air fryer will help you reduce by using it. For most units, this varies between 75 to 90%. For instance, with the Philips HD9220/29 you may fry with up to 75% less fat. But not all units are able to live up to their claim. More than the manufacturer says it is best to go through user reviews to see if the unit really delivers on its fat reduction promise. Bear in mind that the more fat the air fryer can reduce, the healthier the meals you will prepare with it will be.

Material

Most air fryers are made from a combination of PPE plastic and metal materials. The quality of the material with which a unit is built will determine just how durable it will be. Premium air fryers are usually made from high-quality materials that will last for a long time. You should also consider if the unit has parts that are made from machine-washable material. This will have a major impact on the ease of use as it makes cleaning the air fryer components easier.

Warranty

As with every appliance you buy, you’d want your air fryer to be covered by a warranty. In most cases, you will get a warranty of about 1 year on an air fryer. There may also be specific incentive offers or a longer warranty if your register your product within a particular period of time. An extended warranty is a huge confidence booster as you are more confident that any fault will be duly taken care of if they do occur.

Price

You don’t need to buy the most expensive air fryer to get impressive results, but higher-priced units from premium brands are better than cheap ones from no-name brands. We can assure you that you’re likely to get a better experience with your air fryer when you invest in a high-quality unit. Cheap air fryers are low-cost for a reason. They are most likely made from cheap materials and don’t have a lot of features.

An approach that works is to note all the features you want in your air fryer (with some extras if you wish) and buy a unit with the most affordable Philips air fryer price you can find in our review, it is the Philips Premium Analog Air Fryer. This ensures that you get quality without spending a fortune.

Other features

In any modern kitchen, several appliances are competing for space on your countertop. You can make things a lot simpler by opting for an air fryer unit that can perform more than one function. Air fryers with additional functions such as baking mode, grilling, dehydration, rotisserie cooking, and more allow you to combine the functionality of different appliances into a single one saving you cost and affording convenience for your cooking chores.

Units with additional presets are great too. They are particularly great for beginners since you won’t have to bother about mastering the temperature and time of your meal. The unit sets it for you and shuts down when it is done, like in the Philips HD 9230/26. You will find this auto-off feature quite helpful because it ensures that you don’t overcook your food. Additional features to look out for include indicator lights, keep warm and reheating function.

Included components

8 Best Philips Air Fryers: Detailed Reviews
Note that not all air fryers come with additional accessories.

While an air fryer is a versatile appliance, you will discover that you can get more done with your air fryer if it has a few extra accessories. You also get to save on the cost of buying these accessories and avoid the headache of buying one that works specifically for your unit if it comes with it already directly from the manufacturer.

Some of the additional components and accessories to watch out for include:

• Grilling pan: with an accessory like this, your air fryer may also double as a grill for preparing healthy grilled chicken, steaks, and buggers.

• Parchment lining paper: this is useful for users that intend to do some baking with their air fryer. Parchment paper stops food from getting stuck on the fryer basket and makes cleaning easier.

• Baking pans: since many air fryers can be used to bake bread or cakes and prepare a variety of other baked goods, it makes sense to go for one with baking pans if you intend to use your unit for this purpose.

• Cooking rack and skewers: with a cooking rack, you can cook larger meals like chicken drumsticks faster and get more precise results.

What Is Rapid Air technology?

Philips Air Fryers are designed to operate based on a unique patented technology known as Rapid Air Technology Trusted Source The Science Behind Air Fryers | Food Chemistry | So what exactly is an air fryer, and what’s the magic behind crispy French fries that haven’t been dunked into a vat of hot oil? sciencemeetsfood.org . They are built with a top grill and high-speed airflow that helps to cook food fast and more healthily. The Rapid Air technology helps to create a very hot flow of air around the ingredients you are trying to cook and heat them up from all sides for fast, balanced, and healthy meals. This technique is also effective for producing delicious meals.

Food prepared in Philips Air Fryers is deliciously crispy on the outside without becoming overly dry on the inside. This technology also makes preparing meals with Philips air fryers impressively healthier. Conventional deep fryers need a lot of oil to heat food and produce a crispy coating. You don’t need frying oil to prepare meals with Philips Air fryer, thanks to Rapid Air technology. Just the heated, moving air is used, leaving your meals with 80% less fat in comparison to conventional deep-fried recipes.

Of course, the major feature of Rapid Air technology is how fast units built like this operate. It is an easy way to prepare different types of foods. Units with Rapid air technology do not require preheating. The machine only takes about 3 minutes not heat up and you can have French fries ready within 9 minutes.

FAQ

What is the difference between an air fryer and an oven?

Conventional ovens use a heating element (powered by gas or electricity) to produce heat. This heat is slowly dispersed throughout the oven. Convection ovens kick things a notch higher by using a fan to speed up hot air circulation in the oven.

Air fryers use a technology that is somewhat similar to this but not quite the same. In an air fryer, rapid air technology is used to produce heat instead of an element. This ensures that the unit heats up faster than a regular oven. The fact that air fryers are often smaller in size compared to ovens also aids the quicker circulation of heat and limits the possibility of hot spots. The result is crispier and more evenly cooked food.

Many people also consider air frying a much healthier alternative. Because it heats up quickly and is hot enough, you don’t need to add any oil to your food to crisp it up. This is hard to replicate (or even impossible) with a regular oven. Using little or no oil means the dish is generally healthier.

How many servings can I cook in a Philips air fryer?

Generally, this depends on the model and capacity of the Philips air fryer you purchase. The Philips TurboStar Air Fryer XXL, for instance, has a capacity of 3 lbs. The serving may also depend on the exact recipe you are trying to make. The Philips XXL has enough space for 1.4kg of chicken and 6 medium potatoes at the same time.

You can fill your Philips Airfryer up to the “MAX” indicator on the basket. But it is important to note that this max volume would depend on the kind of food you’re preparing. Be sure not to overcrowd the appliance. Even though air fryers are known for even cooking, you may not get desired results if you overcrowd the unit.

How to clean a Philips air fryer?

The exterior of your air fryer can be wiped clean with a slightly damped cloth to get rid of dust, oil, and food residue. For the air fryer interior follow the steps below:
  • Unplug the air fryer from the electricity source and leave it to cool.
  • Remove the pan and the basket. These can be washed in a dishwasher.
  • To reach the heating elements, turn the unit upside down. You can use a flexible brush to reach the area behind the element.
  • The inside of the appliance can be cleaned with a sponge and hot water. You may also use a soft to medium bristle brush to remove any food residue stuck to the element. A hard-bristle or steel brush is not recommended as this would damage the coating of the element.

After cleaning, turn the air fryer back to an upright position then plug it in and turn it on. You can leave it to run like this for a few minutes. This should loosen food residues that could not be wiped off.
