What Are the Key Ingredients?

  • Bell Peppers – You can also use green peppers, but we think the bell peppers give it a better flavor.
  • Meat – We used a mixture of ground beef and Italian sausage, but you could use ground turkey or chicken too. Another option would be to cut the meat in half and add in some cooked white rice.
  • Onion & Garlic – Create a depth of flavor in the mixture.
  • Cilantro – Optional, but gives it flavor. You could also use parsley if you don’t like cilantro.
  • Olive Oil – Used for sauteing; you could also use vegetable, canola oil, or butter.
  • Mozzarella Cheese – For more flavor, you could substitute 1/4 c. of the mozzarella cheese for Parmesan. Remember to grab the block of cheese and shred it yourself for the ultimate reliability!

Alongside the listed key ingredients, you would also be needing;

  • A knife, tray
  • Cutting board
  • An aluminum foil, and
  • A smoker or electric grill

All of these ingredients mentioned have their peculiarities, especially the smoker and the wood. Hence, be sure you go for best offset smokers to make your smoking process less stressful and quick. Below is how to go about the preparation process.

Type of Wood to Use

Every wood comes with its flavor. One of the more popular options is hickory. Smoke from hickory will impart a fresh, simple flavor with density to it.

Other woods you can consider are the Fruit woods. They are pretty popular for the sweetness they bring into smoked food. A perfect example is an Applewood.

Mesquite, for its bold taste in the recipe, is also a good option. The main point is every wood provides a different flavor, so go for the wood you want. Similarly, you can mix it up and make it more delicious.

Also, another option is best charcoal smokers. Charcoal smokers are outstanding, easy to operate, portable, and, more importantly, they come with unique flavors.

Cooking Options

The good thing about stuffed peppers is that you can also grill them over indirect heat. Just like your smoker, preheat the grill to about 350°F, close the lead, place your stuffed peppers over it and leave for about 30 – 40 minutes.

Repeat the same process of topping with cheese and let it stay for another 5 – 10 minutes over the indirect heat. Once it’s ready, remove it from the grill and serve.

Similarly, this can be done using the oven. Set the temperature to about 400°F, place your stuffed peppers in a baking dish, and the dish in the oven. Cover with a foil and leave for about 35 minutes.

Remove the foil, add your cheese, and continue baking for another 10 minutes more. Remove from the oven and serve.

Storage

For leftovers, leave to cool and keep in an airtight container, and place in a refrigerator. Ideally, it should not stay more than three days in the refrigerator. When ready to have them again, put them in a pan and reheat them at 350°F in the oven. You can also do the reheating in a microwave, only that the pepper might get mushy.
