Traeger is a well-known brand that offers high-quality outdoor cookware. The Traeger Ironwood 885 grill has some excellent features that enhance the convenience of this product and ensure you enjoy great tasting dishes cooked to perfection.
Right out of the bat, we have to admit that you will be hard-pressed to find a pellet grill that performs as well as the Traeger Ironwood 885. There is so much going for this product. For example, it comes with an upgraded controller. The controller found on earlier grills from Traeger was quite good, but this new controller offers even better performance.
For instance, during our testing, we observed that the controller offers you better temperature control than any previous models. It also comes with other features that come in really useful.
One of the features of this product that we love and that improves the flavor of your meat is the Tru Convection. With this function, fans help to spread heat and smoke inside the grill and through your food. Furthermore, there is the Downdraft exhaust system that helps to drag the smoke through the cooking chamber. With these two features, you can rest assured that your food will have the desired flavor.
One downside of pellet grills is that they don’t have a smoky flavor like that of the traditional grills. However, Traeger has corrected this flaw, to a great extent, on the Traeger Ironwood 885. How? Through the SuperSmoke feature.
With this feature, you can pass even more smoke through the cooking chamber so that your food gets that smoky flavor that you love. Once used in the early hours of your cooking, you will really enjoy this feature.
The Traeger Ironwood 885 reaches a temperature of up to 500°F, and while that isn’t the highest that we have encountered, it is certainly hot enough for you to use this as your grill.
The Traeger brand has built a name on the quality of its products, and this model, the Traeger Ironwood 885, is certainly no exception. It is one of the more expensive products from this manufacturer, and the construction shows why it is relatively expensive.
The parts are made of high-grade powder-coated steel. This means that you have a grill that is strong, sturdy, and very durable. These parts are resistant to corrosion and can survive bumps, falls, and attacks from the elements. The sawhorse design, which is common in Trager products, is also found here. The advantage of this design is that you have a unit that will remain stable all through your cooking.
Another exterior feature that users will find very handy, especially those that live in cold regions, is that the product is built with side-wall insulation. Therefore, it retains heat better than many of the other products that we find on the market. As it retains more heat, it uses less fuel even in poor weather.
We also observed that the cooking chamber handle and side shelf of the Traeger Ironwood 885 are made of stainless steel. That is great for durability and general use. However, we must admit that we would have enjoyed it more if more structural components were made of stainless steel – considering how expensive this product is.
While the few stainless steel structural components might be a bummer, it is great to see that there is powder coating all over the unit. Because of the coating, there is very little risk of the product corroding.
As with most of the power grills from Traeger, this model comes with a pair of cooking surfaces. First is the 570 square inches area, and then the 315 square inches area. You can have a great time with these two options, and if you are looking for a grill to prepare food for a large number of friends, then this is an excellent option.
The combined surface area is enough to cook up to ten chickens, seven rib racks, or nine pork butts. Therefore, you will have plenty of space to prepare for several people.
This double rack design is one of our favorite things about this grill. One advantage of the double rack design is that it helps to compact the unit. As the cooking space is divided between two racks, you have less space taken up by the product.
Many people prefer to have a single rack so that all their food is as close to the heat source as possible. However, even though the Traeger Ironwood 885 has a double rack design, features like the Downdraft Exhaust System and Tru Convection – which we have mentioned earlier, ensure that the heat and smoke pass evenly through both racks.
Thus, you don’t have to fret about your food being unevenly cooked.
As we have mentioned, the Traeger Ironwood 885 is a pellet grill. To that end, it is powered by the pellets. Pellets are an excellent fuel and source of fuel for several reasons. For one, these are compact and easy to feed into the hopper. With this fuel source, you don’t have to transport tanks or bags of charcoal before you can start grilling.
Another advantage of this heat source is that it does a great job of giving you the flavor that you want. It is highly efficient, and you don’t need to burn plenty of pellets before you can achieve the heat that you want.
The Traeger Ironwood 885 comes with a pellet capacity of 20 lbs. Therefore, you don’t have to frequently refill the hopper during your cooking.
Considering the size and weight, it is easy to assume that this would be a difficult product to assemble. However, that is hardly the case with this model. When assembling this unit, it took us just around thirty minutes to put everything together.
One reason why it was so easy is that the unit comes pre-assembled. There’s not a lot to putting this together apart from attaching the legs, removing some parts from the plastic, and installing these in the cooking chamber.
It should be noted, though, that since this is one of the heavier grills, it would be difficult for one person to put it all together. It is at least a two-person job.
The cooking grates are some of our favorite things about the Traeger Ironwood 885. These are made from standard porcelain-coated steel. Therefore, they come with the inherent advantages that such a build brings.
Part of the advantages that come from this material is that the grates are non-stick. Also, they are a breeze to clean. They might not be made of stainless steel, but they are certainly fit for purpose.
One feature that many overlook, but which we believe makes the Traeger Ironwood 885 one of the best in its class, is the motor. The direct-drive pellet auger, which is the part of the product that fires the pellets into the firepot, is powered by a brushless DC motor.
There are several advantages to this motor. Previous pellet grills made by several manufacturers faced the problem of low-powered augers. Because they didn’t have enough power, they tended to have pellets caught in them, which caused clogging. Well, you certainly don’t have that problem with the Traeger Ironwood 885. The brushless DC motor offers plenty of torque while having a lower RPM.
The implication of this is that it will keep on working without any clogs.
You certainly want a grill that is easy to use. Well, you can rest assured that the Traeger Ironwood 885 is easy to use. It comes with a control panel that is intuitive and easy to navigate.
Furthermore, Traeger Ironwood 885 comes with WIFI connectivity that makes everything so much easier for you. The WIFIRE feature comes with app connectivity. The app allows you more flexibility and ease as you cook. For one, it lets you check and adjust the temperature of the unit. It allows you to switch certain features ON or OFF, and the meat probe sends the exact temperature of the meat to the app.
Old-school pitmaster might scoff at the digital transformation that grills are going through; however, we absolutely enjoy the convenience and ease that these features bring. You can control, adjust, monitor and do much more without having to be physically present.
It will make it more bearable to prepare foods that traditionally take a long time to be done. With such features, you don’t have to stay in bad weather just because you want to monitor what you are cooking.
And these digital features take the guesswork out of cooking – no more overcooking or undercooking your food again.
Is there anything more convenient than just telling the grill what to do? We don’t think so.
Another excellent feature is that there is a pellet sensor. With this sensor, you can know when you are running low on the wood pellets. Not all products come with this feature, and we really found it handy. While the pellet capacity is considerable, ensuring that you don’t run out any time soon, it is still great to have a feature like that.
One of the biggest features of the Traeger Ironwood 885 is the WIFI Technology. This feature not only makes the grill easier to use but it also improves the safety that comes with using the unit. This technology allows you to walk away from the grill and do some other things without worrying about fire hazards.
The unit has a temperature sensor that will switch off the internal components of the grill when it is too low or too high.
Furthermore, the design of this unit ensures that it one of the most stable models from the brand. Thus, there is a limited risk of tipping the grill over during use.
As this is WIFI compatible, one of the most important safety features that we love is that there is no option for remote start. While it might seem more convenient to have a remote start, it is dangerous. After all, your kids might fiddle with your phone and start a fire without your knowledge.
Portability is important if you are looking for a unit that you can use for picnics and take around with you. Well, in terms of portability, this isn’t the most portable option out there. In fact, at 175 lbs. weight, this is a rather heavy grill.
You might therefore find it hard transporting it from one spot to the other.
Traeger used to offer some of the best warranties in the industry. However, as they had more competition, the warranties have become even shorter. Nevertheless, this model comes with a three-year warranty.
Based on reviews from other users and what we strongly believe, the Traeger Ironwood 885 will last well past that warranty period. Nevertheless, the warranty comes in very useful when you are looking to replace parts or if you run into any technical issues within the three-year period.
When it comes to durability, there is no beating this unit. It is made from high-quality stainless steel, and the other parts that aren’t made of steel are powder-coated. Therefore, if you have to keep your grill outside in bad weather, you don’t have to fret about this unit. It will continue functional and undamaged despite bad weather.
Maintenance is vital if you want your grill to last. One of the best ways to maintain the grill is by cleaning it often.
From our testing and reviews from other users, the Traeger Ironwood 885 is easy to clean and maintain. One reason why it is really easy to clean is the cooking grates. These are coated with porcelain, which will make it easy to wipe down.
Another feature that eases maintenance is the pellet hopper release system. With this feature, you can remove pellets from the hopper after use. It is convenient to scoop out any ash and pellets. Additionally, the clean-out door is magnetic.
Cleaning the unit after use is recommended and easy. It is better to scrape down the grates while they are still warm. After removing the grates, you can easily detach the drip tray and baffle. We discovered that your cleaning could be easier with a vacuum.
There isn’t a lot of difference between these two products from Taeger. The major difference is the size. Where the Ironwood 885 has a cooking space of 885 square inches, the Ironwood 650 has a cooking space of 650 square inches. Other than that, they both have similar features like the WIFIRE technology, app control, double racks, and most of the features we have already considered in this review.
Ironwood is one of the best series from Traeger, and the Traeger Ironwood 885 is one of the best from the line of products. The unit might not have some of the most advanced features, but it comes with everything that you need to have a great time. This Traeger Ironwood 885 wood pellet grill review has shown what some of the best features this unit is, as well as the drawbacks. We hope that this helps you to determine whether this is the right grill for you.
